Stacey Jones '71 Honored with Diligence to Victory Award

On the evening of Oct. 20, during the Alumni Association’s Third Annual Reunion Dinner, alumnus Stacey Jones '71 was honored with the Diligence to Victory Award, the highest alumni honor bestowed by UAFS.

The award is named for the motto of the first class at Fort Smith Junior College — “Through diligence to victory” — and recipients are alumni who have distinguished themselves through service to their community, state, or nation, or whose outstanding leadership in their business or professional lives exemplifies this motto.

Last year, the award went to Mrs. Peggy Raynor Weidman '73. The year before—the first year it was awarded—it went to Mr. Randy Wewers '58.

Jones currently serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus and Community Events at the University. He has been an employee of UAFS and its predecessors for more than 40 years.

In recognizing Jones, Chancellor Paul B. Beran, Ph.D., said:

Stacey Jones has literally devoted his entire professional life—and much of his personal life—to Westark and UAFS. The most visible result of that is the Season of Entertainment, now in its 32nd year, which he conceived and built from the ground up.

The Season of Entertainment is a perfect example of Stacey’s genius for creating synergy between the university and the community. But it’s hardly the only example.

Stacey has been instrumental over the years in innumerable events that brought together the university and the community. Just to start, those include Paint the Park Pink, Festival on the Border, the International Festival, BEST Robotics, and the Miss UAFS Scholarship Pageant.

He has also worked closely with our cheer and dance teams for years, served as producer of the Miss Arkansas pageant, and helped raise the profile of UAFS athletics by making them more accessible to the community.

Suffice it to say that his work on behalf of this University has gone far above and beyond his job.

At least as important as what Stacey has done is how he has done it. His integrity and character, his commitment and devotion, his enthusiasm and energy are legendary. In short, Stacey Jones is a Fort Smith icon, and we couldn’t be prouder to count him as an alumnus.

Congratulations, Stacey!
